UV damage: how sunlight ruins cards

Sunlight fades a card by breaking down the pigments in its printed ink and the metallic layer in its foil, and it does this whether the card is sitting in direct sun or just near a sunny window. The damage is chemical, not cosmetic dust settling on the surface, which is why it can't be wiped off and why it doesn't reverse once it happens. The only real defenses are distance from light, time, and blocking the specific wavelengths that do the breaking down.
How sunlight actually fades a card
Ultraviolet light carries enough energy to break chemical bonds in the dyes and pigments printed on a card's surface. Over time, that breakdown shows up as fading, usually starting at the edges or wherever the card gets the most direct exposure, and often uneven rather than a clean overall dimming. Foil and holo layers are especially exposed to this because the thin metallic or reflective coating sits right at the surface, with none of the card stock underneath to buffer it. A foil card left in a sunny spot can go dull or discolored well before the printed ink around it shows obvious change.
Visible light plays a smaller role too, mostly through simple heat and prolonged brightness, but UV is doing most of the actual work. That's the part that matters for how you display or store anything you don't want to change over time.

Window glass: does it actually stop UV?
Partly. Ordinary window glass blocks most UVB, the shorter, harsher wavelength, but it lets a meaningful amount of UVA through, and UVA is still enough to fade dyes and foils given enough time. This is the same reason skin can still tan through a car window even though a sunburn from that exposure is less likely. Practically, it means a card sitting near a sunny window is better off than one taped to the actual glass or left outside, but it is not protected the way people sometimes assume. "Out of direct sun" and "safe from UV" are not the same claim, and treating them as interchangeable is how a lot of accidental fading happens.
The display tradeoff: seeing it vs protecting it
This is the real tension behind every display decision. A card you can't see is doing nothing for you on a shelf, but a card you can see is, by definition, exposed to whatever light is in the room. There's no display setup that gets you both zero exposure and full visibility; every choice trades one for the other to some degree.
Some display formats handle this better than others. A slab or holder positioned away from windows and direct light sources, rotated occasionally rather than left facing the same direction for years, will fade far slower than one propped in a bright spot.
