Acid free vs PVC free: not the same thing

PVC free is a claim about plastic. Acid free is a claim about paper. A sleeve can be one, the other, both, or neither, and the label tells you nothing about the claim it doesn't make.
The two claims, untangled
"PVC free" means the plastic touching your card isn't vinyl. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is rigid on its own, so manufacturers add plasticizers, chemical compounds that work between the polymer chains to let the plastic bend. Plasticizers don't stay put. Over years they migrate slowly to the surface, which is why an old vinyl sleeve goes tacky, turns cloudy, or in bad cases welds itself to the card underneath. It's the same chemistry that makes old vinyl records and car dashboards go sticky with age, just applied to something you're trying to keep in mint condition.
"Acid free" means something else entirely: it's a claim about paper and board, not plastic. Cheap paper and cardboard, including the kind used in old backing boards and bulk storage boxes, can be naturally acidic depending on how the pulp was processed. Acidic paper yellows faster and turns brittle over decades, and it can pass some of that acidity to anything pressed against it for years, like a card resting on an acidic paper insert. "Acid free" means the paper has been buffered or processed to a neutral pH, so it isn't actively working against whatever sits on it.
Neither claim implies the other. A PVC-free polypropylene sleeve says nothing about the paper backing board it's stored next to, and an acid-free paper insert says nothing about the plastic sleeve wrapped around the card. They're answers to two separate questions that happen to get asked on the same packaging, mostly because the same collector who cares about one tends to care about the other, not because the chemistry is related.
That's also why the two claims get printed side by side so often that people start treating them as one thing. Packaging copy has an incentive to bundle every safety claim it can fit on the front of the pack, and "acid free, PVC free" reads as one reassurance even though it's answering two different questions about two different materials.

Polypropylene, PET, and Mylar all share the same relevant property: none of them need an additive to stay usable, so there's nothing sitting inside the plastic waiting to migrate onto your card. PVC is the outlier, and it's the one material on this list you actually have to check for before buying.
The three safe plastics aren't interchangeable in every other way, though. Polypropylene is what most standard sleeves and binder pages are made from, and it's the one you'll meet constantly without ever having to look for it by name. PET shows up more in rigid pieces, toploaders and semi-rigid holders, where you want a plastic that holds a shape rather than flexes. Mylar sits a level above both, the material archivists reach for specifically, and it shows up in premium sleeves aimed at people storing a card for decades rather than a season. None of that ranking is about acid or PVC risk, all three clear that bar equally. It's about what job each plastic is actually built to do.
How to check what you already own
Start with the packaging. A genuine "PVC free" or "acid free" claim is usually printed plainly, not buried in fine print, because it's a selling point. If a product doesn't mention either one, especially a bargain bulk pack, treat that as a real gap rather than an oversight.
A strong plastic or vinyl smell straight out of the package is worth trusting. That smell is often the plasticizer itself, and it's one of the few checks you can do without any tools. For sleeves you already own and can't identify, look for stiffness and clarity: PVC tends to feel slightly tackier and heavier than polypropylene of the same thickness, though this is a soft signal, not a substitute for a stated material.
For anything going into long-term storage, a graded card, a set you're keeping for a decade, a sealed bin you won't reopen soon, this is where it's worth being deliberate. A deck you'll shuffle through a season and trade away isn't at meaningful risk either way, since both plasticizer migration and acid degradation are slow processes measured in years, not weeks.
