Do toploaders fit in binders? Mostly no (3 do)

Mostly no. A regular binder pocket is cut around a sleeved card, and a toploader is a rigid shell that runs both bigger and stiffer than that pocket was ever built to take. Force one in and the seam stretches before the toploader ever sits flush, then it tears. Three binders in our data are actually built for the shape, and nothing else we've measured does the job, Vault X included.
- BCW Z-Folio 9-Pocket LX Album - Toploaders - 252 cards. The largest capacity of the three, and the one we'd buy first if page count matters more than brand loyalty.
- TopDeck TopLoader Binder - 216 cards. A single-purpose binder built around the 3x4 shape and not much else.
- Gemloader Premium 3x4 Toploader Fit Binder - 216 cards. Matches the TopDeck on capacity; the choice between them usually comes down to what's actually in stock.
All three share more than the shape, too: nine-pocket zip pages, side-loading pockets, and a confirmed fit for double sleeved cards on top of the toploader fit. Nobody's built a 4-pocket or 12-pocket toploader binder that we've found. The whole niche has settled on one page size and left it there.
Why an ordinary pocket rejects a toploader
A standard 9-pocket or 4-pocket page is sized for a card sitting in a normal sleeve, something close to the 66x91mm a Dragon Shield or KMC standard sleeve measures. That's a soft stack: card plus a thin layer of polypropylene, with real give in the material when you slide it into a seam.
A toploader isn't soft. Look at the interior cavity alone on a standard 35pt toploader, the empty space that holds just the card: 69.9x98.4mm on the BCW version, 70x97mm on the Ultra Pro. That's before you count the thickness of the rigid plastic walls around it. A pocket with no slack for a card that size has even less room for a shell that won't bend to fit a tight seam the way a sleeve does, and the pocket loses that fight every time. A stretched seam doesn't shrink back afterward, either. A 3x4 toploader is really sized around the 63.5x88.9mm sports card, and a smaller Magic or Pokemon card at 63x88mm just rides inside it with a bit of extra room, so the fit problem isn't about which game you play. It's the shell itself.
Notice the capacity cost, too, once you set a toploader binder next to a regular one. A standard 9-pocket zip binder holds 360 cards in that same footprint. The three toploader binders above cap out between 216 and 252 despite having the identical nine pockets per page. That's not a manufacturing shortcut, it's the tradeoff: widen a pocket enough to swallow a rigid shell and you lose room for as many of them per page. Every toploader binder we've found pays that tax, and there's no way around it without shrinking the shell itself.
What we'd actually do
Split the job instead of forcing one binder to cover both. Sleeved bulk, the stuff you're not precious about, belongs in an ordinary side-loading binder built for the 66x91mm sleeve size; that's what most binder pages on the market are designed around, and it's cheaper per card besides. Real pulls, the cards you toploadered because you want to see them without ever handling them again, belong in one of the three binders above, or in a toploader-rated box if you'd rather not flip pages at all. Trying to make one binder cover both jobs usually ends with the toploaders wrecking the pockets and the sleeved cards rattling loose in pockets sized for something bigger.
Where we'd draw the line on which route to take: under a few dozen toploadered pulls, skip the binder outright and use a small toploader box instead. You get the same rigidity and none of the pocket-tax capacity loss. Past a hundred or so, once you actually want to flip through them like a catalog instead of digging through a box lid, one of the three binders above starts paying for itself.
That's also the case against improvising: buying a regular binders page and hoping a toploader squeezes in wastes both the binder and, eventually, the card. One thing we wouldn't do is buy a toploader binder as your only binder on the assumption it'll handle everything eventually. It technically holds double sleeved cards too, since a pocket that wide has plenty of slack for a soft stack, but a bare or single-sleeved card just rattles around loose in a pocket built for a rigid shell. Use the size that matches most of what's actually going in it, and let the exceptions live somewhere else.
Quick answers
Can you put toploaders in a binder? Only if the binder was built for it. Standard sleeved-card pockets don't have the size or the stiffness to take a toploader without damage, no matter how carefully you try to work it in.

Can you modify a regular binder to fit toploaders instead of buying a special one? We wouldn't. Cutting or stretching a regular pocket ruins the page and still doesn't give the toploader a clean fit; you end up with a torn pocket and a scuffed card, which is worse than where you started.
If you're toploadering cards because you want to see them without handling them, don't compromise on the binder underneath. A pocket that wasn't built for the shape fights you every time you turn the page, and the card usually loses that fight first.
